Silver Art Nouveau Pendant Bernhard Hertz Skonvirke
This art nouveau (Skonvirke) pendant was made by Danish silversmith Bernhard Hertz. Skonvirke was the Danish equivalent of the Arts & Crafts movement which manifested as Art Nouveau in France, Jugendstil in Germany and Secessionstil in Austria. But as Christie Romero points out in Warman’s jewelry “one of the unique qualities of Skonvirke jewelry is its sculptural three-dimensionality”. This pendant is an excellent example of that with its use of repousse to create volume. The pendant is set with two chrysoprase cabachons, the larger oval being 9x11 mm and the smaller round stone is about 5mm. The pendant, exclusive of the bail is 3 x 2 ˝ inches and is marked on the rear BH and 830 S for the silver content.
